 ~ PART I - WELCOME ~

MR. DAVID MISCAVIGE: While we celebrate the 35th anniversary of this one church — this is also our annual "open house" reflective of the Scientology religion around the globe. As you will have seen when you arrived — throughout the Manor and its grounds, are exhibits and displays explaining both Scientology itself, and the many programs we are engaged in. We want you to know who we are and what we stand for.

Of course, the primary question is "What is Scientology?" The answer has never been more relevant than today — especially with what faces our modern-day society.

Let me be blunt. Scientology does have answers. Real answers.  Answers that work.  Bold statements? Yes. But, what millions of people — from over 150 nations — will tell you themselves.

Today we are at a watershed in history. At stake is whether the ideals we cherish will survive or some new abhorrent set of values win the day. And if that decline has been evident through the past half century, it continues unabated into this new one.

The events of September 11th served as a wake-up call for all of us. When one must worry, in today's modern world, about the safety of its citizens, when one's solutions are limited to the use of military might, it is obvious that the problems we face run much deeper.

It's a situation none of us can ignore. They are conditions we all must face. They are problems we all must be responsible for helping to resolve.

Yet look around the world today — what will you hear? "What can I do about it?" "I'm just me." And therein lies the real problem. For the truth of the matter is that just "me" and "we" are the most powerful force on this Earth.

And no, I am not merely speaking of the daily headlines of international warfare and conflict. The fact is, that's only but the latest chapter in the drama that has continued to unfold for the past several millennia. War — man against man — nation against nation. And if today it is different, that's only because the weapons are larger. It's a long way from sticks and stones, to laser-guided missiles.

But here's the real point. While we are hit with the daily headlines, the Code Orange terror alerts, and all else, it obscures the deeper, more serious problem that underlies it all. Man himself.

~ PART II - PLANETARY PROBLEMS  ~

Today we live in a world increasingly obsessed with science. Yes — we can send man to the Moon, explore the surface of Mars, and even survey the galaxy with NASA probes. With advanced computer technology, and satellites circling the globe, we can communicate to anyone, anywhere on Earth, and in an instant.

Yet with all of that — everything science has brought us — there is a void. In fact, it's a chasm. And at the bottom of that chasm are the humanities. So, it shouldn't surprise any of us that with all the high technology of this 21st century, science can't yet prevent war.

What about the terror alerts that are a part of everyday existence? The upsets at home that are so common it's considered part of the daily grind called life? That's a Code Orange taking place in millions of households every day. Or what about raising a child today? If it's not the drugs, then it's the all too common worry that they'll actually get an education. That's the real terror alert and it's at Code Red.

The answer to this planet's problems will not be found in the "material." Of this there can be no question. For if those solutions can't prevent war nation to nation, how then can it be expected to answer questions like "love," "happiness" or "peace of mind?" So, we can't expect the answer to be found in chemicals. Not unless one buys into a synthesized utopia, or a "Brave New World," with a perfect pleasure drug.

Yet that is precisely what we see in the world today, with multi-million dollar conglomerates providing a cornucopia of new pills as a panacea to all ills — making the pharmaceutical industry the most profitable business on the planet — more than banking, high finance, oil or computers. Common sense tells us it's the wrong answer.

After all, it isn't just mere coincidence that the arrivalof those new drugs always coincide with the expiration of the last one's patent. That's a fact.

And when the success of the latest "feel good" pill is judged by profit, well don't be surprised when happiness isn't the result. After all, what then would happen with all those blue chip stocks?

As any businessman knows — good marketing strategy requires the constant outflow of new product. And besides, the statistics say it all — those pills are not working.

So, do we think new answers are needed?

Yes, we do.

Do people, at times, suspect offers of "help"?

Unfortunately, they do. And it's not surprising. Because too many times that help has failed.

What people need are real solutions, real tools to deal with and effectively overcome human problems.

Every one of us has experienced it.

Think back yourself and you'll remember when you tried to help a grieving loved one, a struggling child, a friend overcome by addiction. And where you have failed, it's only because you lacked the tools to effectively accomplish what you desired. That is what Scientology offers. Help. …

~ PART III - THE SCIENTOLOGY RELIGION ~

The Aims of Scientology are a world without insanity, without criminals, without war, where the able can prosper and where Man is free to rise to greater heights. Also inherent in Scientology itself, is that one take responsibility, not only for himself, but the world at large. And absolutely no part of those efforts have anything to do with mere "belief" or "blind faith" in a doctrine. Rather, we use what we know to help others, and we couldn't care less about their race, creed, color or religion.

All of which brings us to this evening's event, this Church and the question, "What is Scientology?" For I assure you it is far more than rehabilitation, literacy and morality. Rather — those are inevitable societal offshoots that stem from what Scientology is, and it's also why Scientologists are so dedicated to actually making a better world.

Contained in the body of Dianetics and Scientology are answers to those age-old questions — Who am I? What's the purpose of all this? And, What happens when I die?

The direct answers are: You are a spiritual being, distinct and separate from a body. You have lived lifetime after lifetime and will live again. You are seeking to survive for yourself, your family, group, mankind, the physical universe, and to survive as a spirit. And only when you have fully achieved that level of enlightenment can you truly understand the Creator.

And while that may sound familiar to many of you in the tradition of the ancient Eastern religions — you are certainly correct. What is different, and what is new about Scientology, are the means and ways of achieving it. For Scientology is a modern religion, born in the technical age of the 20th century. And if you were to ask any Scientologist, they would tell you it is a practical religion, with practical answers — tools that can be applied to achieve that greater awareness and purpose in the here and now. Or, as we say it, when you have the answers to life's questions — there is virtually no part of existence it cannot be applied to for the betterment of life itself.

As for what it means in the greater scope of things — well, I return to that "greater drama" I referenced at the outset. It is summed up in the cycle of religion and science, and the question of which one held the answer to man himself. That has been the battle, and it's been a continuous cycle. And while, through the ages, each has pointed to the "failures" of the other to support their position, we believe neither was correct. Instead, they both awaited a mutual meeting ground. That, to us, is Scientology.

And with that in mind, I won't try to tell you that as a religion we are "just like everybody else." Certainly we share those same goals of peace, compassion, the belief in a higher purpose — that life transcends this mere existence of the "clay" that is our bodies. Beyond that, we seek evolution to a better state for man in the here and now.

So yes, we may be new — we may be different. We know that despite the efforts and money of a great many people, those old solutions are not working. You can throw billions at those same solutions and they still won't work. Of that, there is no doubt. That's a certainty.

Let's not, then, judge our answers by the "authorities" that have failed. For that is the path of hopelessness. And if we can't yet imagine the possibility of a better tomorrow, then have we not even forfeited our dreams? Let's instead, all of us, work to help one another.

~ PART IV - CONCLUSION ~

We believe there is hope. We believe we can help. We believe in you. And with that, let me appropriately leave you with a final word from L. Ron Hubbard. It comes from the final pages of Dianetics, and is reflective of all we stand for and what Mr. Hubbard spent a life to help us achieve:

"There is a higher goal, a better goal, a more glorious victory than gutted towns and radiation-burned dead.

"There is freedom and happiness and plenty and a whole universe to be won.

"He who would not see it is far from worthy to rule.

"He who would indulge his hates is too insane to advise.

"How much can man conquer?

"He loses if he conquers man.

"He wins if he conquers his own fears and conquers then the stars.

"Attack the natural enemies of man, attack them well, and war of man with man cannot thereafter be a problem.

"This is rationality."
